Link Governor for Years 5-6

I am a retired Headteacher, living in the local area. Two of my grandchildren currently attend Uplands Primary School.

I have spent most of my career working in schools in the Gosport and Fareham area and throughout that time I was involved in the work of and served on various Governing Boards. I fully understand the importance of the Governing Board to the school and its contribution to the school’s effectiveness.

Since I retired from headship, I continued to fulfil my interest in education by working part time as a Link Tutor with Winchester, Chichester and Southampton Universities, visiting primary schools across Hampshire, to supervise Trainee Teachers while they were on School Experience.

I remain very interested in education and I firmly believe that schools must provide the best possible education for each and every child, so that they can maximise their ability in all areas. I therefore fully endorse Uplands’ vision “to be the best you can be”.

I am delighted to have become a member of the Governing Board at Uplands and relish the opportunity of being involved in education and working as part of the team to serve the school.

Training Liason Governor

I have lived in the Fareham area all my life, and my wife’s family have strong ties to the school. She and her two siblings went to Uplands, and their mum was also a dinner lady here for several years. In 2006, my wife and I moved back to the estate specifically so that we would be in the catchment area for Uplands School. In September 2018, this came to fruition: our daughter joined year R. Our son will hopefully start in 2021, meaning that we’ll have at least one child at the school for the next 10 years.

I am very grateful to have been accepted as a Co-opted Governor, and I hope my experience will be valuable to the role. I have degrees in both Law and in Accounting, and I’ve worked in HR for over 10 years, and in Finance before that. Today, I work in the HR department at the head office of a high street retailer.

I have very fond memories of my own time in primary school, and I want to be able to contribute to what is such an important part of childhood – not only for my own children, but also for all the other children in the school. I am very much looking forward to helping with the school’s continued development.

I joined the Uplands Teaching Team in 2015. My main role is, class teacher, I am also a Year Leader and Mathematics manager across the school. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working at Uplands as it has helped me to develop my practice and support children in all areas of their needs. What I love most about Uplands is that it is a highly supportive environment which allows everyone to grow. I hope, as a Staff Governor I can have a positive influence on supporting the school with its journey.

Following a 26 year career in the Royal Navy, I qualified as a primary teacher and taught full time for about 10 years in several different schools. I then qualified as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and Hypnotherapist running my own practice alongside a little teaching on a supply basis. I have experience as a secondary school governor in the past and other interests have included being a UEFA qualified coach and football referee. Helping to raise the profile of mental health issues and encouraging individuals, young and old, to believe in their own abilities has been a driving force in my life; I feel this is never more important than in the early education of our children. I am now at a stage in life where I am learning to adjust to the opportunities of retirement. I am therefore delighted to be able to offer my time, knowledge and experience to the Uplands team in their quest for educational excellence.

I have been a Secondary School Governor for some 10 years and in that time I have gained a wide range of skills, knowledge and expertise, which I will use to benefit the Governing Board at Uplands. At the same time, I am keen to take on the new challenges presented within a primary setting and continue my learning to ensure our pupils, staff and the community flourish. I am married with two daughters in their  early twenties and have a background in Financial Services. Alongside my governor role, I am the trustee of a small education charity providing English teaching in rural Laos, south east Asia.
